Samut Prakan - description of the city:

Samut Prakan is one of the main provinces of Thailand, located at the merger of the Chao Phraya river and the Gulf of Thailand. The province is also considered as Pak Nam. Samut Prakan is the part of Bangkok Metropolitan Region. Bangkok is an adjacent provinces to the north and west, and Chachoengsao to the east. Suvarnabhumi Airport is also located in one of the region of Samut Prakan Province-Bang Phli.

The west part of province consists mostly of rice paddies and shrimp farms. The eastern part is most the city centre with municipal factories which located in the Bangkok.

Samut Prakan was created during Ayutthaya period. At that time executive centre was at Prapadaeng. King Rama II started construction for the new centre at Samut Prakan in 1819th.

The province has a shoreline about 47 kilometers. In Samut Prakan are a lot of good-looking places to see. Two of the most popular tourist attractions are Mueang Boran «Ancient city», a park where is collection of reduced replicas of all major historical buildings of Thailand; and the Crocodile Farm. Near Suvarnabhumi Airport is a famous annual Lotus Flower Festival. Bang Pu Reserve has a large bird population and it is a popular resting-place for Thai people feeding the wintering seagulls. In Samut Prakan are also about 23 museums and farms to visit.

The traditional delicious in the province like a Khanom chak, a sweet made from flour, coconut and sugar;or Pu khai, crab with eggs; Pla Salit, salted and dried snakeskin gourami; Mamuang nam dokmai, a mango sweet, available during January and February; and Gung yiat, stretched and dried prawns. In Samut Prakan takes about 5 cultural festivals: Pak Lat (Songkran Festival, 13 April), Song Khao, Phra Samut Chedi Fair (for 9 days, starting from the 5th day of the waning moon of the 11th lunar month), Rap Bua and Luangpho Pan Fair.

The temple Phra Samut Chedi the most important site of Buddhist worship in the province, embodies a gist and soul of Samut Prakan.
