Riga

Riga - description of the city:

Riga is the capital of Latvia, located on the Daugava River, where it flows into the Gulf of Riga in the Baltic Sea. It is a railway junction and a seaport. The city dates back to 1198. Since 1201, Riga was the residence of the Bishop of Livonia. In 1621, it was conquered by the Swedes. In 1656, the Russian Tsar Alexis of Russia made an unsuccessful conquest of Riga. Only in 1710 during the Great Northern War, the city passed to the Russian Empire. In 1919, Riga became the capital of the Republic of Latvia (in 1940-1991 - the Latvian SSR).

The city is home to 924 000 inhabitants. Main industries include engineering and metalworking, including electrical and electronics industries, chemical, pharmaceutical, woodworking, light, food, perfume and cosmetic industries; and production of building materials. The city has the Latvian Academy of Sciences, 7 universities, including the University of Latvia, the University of Technology, the Conservatory; 9 theaters, including the National Opera of Latvia. Among museums the most famous are the Museum of Latvia, the History and Navigation Museum, the Museum of Art, Museums of Nature, the Museum of Foreign Art, and the Museum of Literature and Art. Architectural monuments consist of the Riga Cathedral (13th century), famous for its acoustics, the St. James’s Cathedral (13th century), the St. Peter’s Church (13th - early 15th centuries), the Riga Castle (14-19th centuries), houses of 15-18th centuries, and the Brothers' Cemetery (1924-1936). The famous resort of Jurmala is located near Riga.
