Description of Maldives

The Maldive Islands are located in the Indian Ocean, south-west of India and Sri Lanka. Altogether there are 1,190 islands that form 26 atolls stretching in a form of a double chain perpendicularly to equator. Among all the islands only 202 are inhabited, including 88 islands with tourist resorts. The length of the Maldivian archipelago from north to south is of 820 km, from east to west - 120 km. The total area of the Maldives, with the land and the sea areas, is about 90 thousand square kilometers.

The name "Maldives" derives from the Indian words "mahal" (palace) and "diva" (island). The Maldive Islands consist of two rows of atolls. These atolls are the result of the millennial coral growth. Each year, the coral colonies grow by 1-4 cm, and finally come to the surface of the water. The interior part of the coral dies and after some (rather long) time a lagoon begins to form. It is always advantageous for the ocean, because the erosion turns corals into soft white sand, which Maldivian beaches are famous for. In a few more years (perhaps a few hundred years) forms a new island. The Maldives consist of 19 atolls, and each of these atolls includes one or more islands.

Fauna of the islands is not particularly rich. Most of the animals were brought to the islands by a man. Once, the islands were inhabited only by sea birds. There are about 100 species of feathered inhabitants on the islands, half of them are residents, and the other half - migratory birds. There are a lot of gulls and terns in the Maldives, as well as birds-cornets, which ruin others’ nests. They can rarely be seen, but very often in the morning you can hear their loud and mournful whistle. On the coast and corals extending from the water, one can find shorebirds and snipes, which enjoy eating crustaceans. In the Maldives, there are also two species of herons: large, gray herons and little island ones, which local residents often keep at home.

The Maldive Islands are famous for ornamental plants - roses, altheas, pink, yellow and white frangipanis, exhaling a sweet aroma, hibiscuses, and orchids. These plants require meticulous care and therefore decorate the streets of the capital Male and tourist islands; there are few of them on the fishing islands. A rose flower became a national symbol of the Maldives. All crops, except coconut, also were introduced by a man. Bananas, papayas, mangoes, melons, pineapples, and limes are grown there.
