Bucuresti - description of the city:

Bucharest is the capital of Romania, located on the Wallachian Plain, on the Dâmboviţa River, 45 km from the Danube. It is a self administrative unit. In the 14th century, on the territory of the city was built a Turkish fortress, around which began to grow the city. Bucharest was always the object of rivalry between Russia, Austria-Hungary and Turkey. The city is the capital of independent Romania since 1958. Currently, it is home to 2.09 million inhabitants. There is a transport interchange, an international airport and a subway. Bucharest is a major industrial center, including machine building and metalworking, textile, leather and footwear, chemical, clothing, food, glass, porcelain, printing industry, nonferrous and ferrous metallurgy, and woodworking. The Romanian Academy of Sciences and industrial academies, universities and other higher educational institutions, theaters and the concert hall "Athenaeum" (19th century) are situated in Bucharest. Museums consist of the National Museum of Antiquities, the Museum of Art, and the Museum of Folk Art. Most landmarks of Bucharest imitate French style, for which it is sometimes called the "Paris of the Balkans." During the reign of the Communist dictator Ceausescu, one of the grandest buildings in the world was built in the city - the Palace of the Republic. Its size - 270 to 240 m, height - 100 m. There have been a number of important diplomatic meetings and signed a number of contracts in Bucharest. The Treaty of Bucharest put the end to the Russian-Turkish war of 1806 -1812; the Treaty of Bucharest ended the Second Balkan War of 1812-1813; according to the Treaty of Bucharest in 1918, Romania got out of the First World War.
